If Merriman can't get the job done, then English will have to step into the gap and achieve as the top pass rusher for this team to succeed.
The other estimate one pick that holds the key to this defense is Antoine Cason. Last season he started the year as the nickel back, but was demoted as security Steve Gregory was asked to replace him. Now that Cromartie is gone Cason will be asked to be a starting cornerback and play more consistently opposite Quentin Jammer. If he doesn't, veteran Nathan Vasher who was a college teammate of Jammer's will as a matter of fact take his place. Cromartie's cover skills were good, but he often played way off receivers and showed a inevitable aversion to tackling at times. Cason should be a vast revision for this team's run defense and hopefully not be much of a drop off in coverage skills.
Despite this defense's shortcomings last season they showed the potential to step up and make plays at principal times. They proved that during the game in Dallas when a goal line stand denied the Cowboys a touchdown and turned the ball back over to the offense. Despite changes in the secondary and the lack of a pass rush from the front seven, this defense improved greatly against the pass. More changes in the secondary could mean more mistakes, but an improved pass rush would cover those up. It's hard to put the accountability for this defense's success on the shoulders of only two men, but Thomas and Merriman probably hold the fate of this unit in their big mitts. If Thomas can help stop the run and Merriman can provide more sacks, this defense could help the Bolts win a Super Bowl. A few other role players like Castillo and Cason have to contribute also and the team as a whole needs to stay healthy. If Rivera can get #1 production from those #1 picks, it will make his job a lot easier and the road to the Super Bowl much smoother for the Bolts.
